Ben-Aharon, Yitzhak

(1906- ). Born in Bukovina. Studied in Chernovitz and Berlin and emigrated to Eretz Israel in 1928. One of the founders of Kibbutz Givat Haim and a member of it since 1933. In the period 1932-38 was Secretary of the Tel Aviv Workers' Council and from 1938 to 1939 was Secretary of Mapai. In July 1940 volunteered for the British Army. Served as an officer in a Pioneer company and was taken prisoner in Greece in 1941. Was released in 1945, and after demobilization from the army was one of the leaders of the Achdut Ha'avodah movement and of Mapam. Represented Mapam in the First and Second Knessets, Achdut Ha'avodah from the Third to the Fifth Knessets, and the Ma'arach from the Third to the Fifth Knessets, and the Ma'arach in the Seventh and Eight Knessets. During the period 1956-62 was Minister of Transport; from 1969 to 1973 was Secretary General of the Histadrut. Retired from political life in 1977.
