Laskov, Haim

(1919-82). Born in Russia. Immigrated to Eretz Israel in 1925 and studied in the Reali High School in Haifa. Joined the Haganah (1932) and served in the Field Companies (1939-40). Volunteered for the British Army (1941-46) and in 1947 joined the permanent staff of the Haganah. Commanded the first war-time officers course in 1948, a battalion during operation Nachshon, the 79th armoured battalion of the 7th Brigade, and the 7th Brigade. Commanding officer of operation Dekel, and Director of military training in the general staff (1948-51). Commander of the Air Force (1951-53). Head of G Branch (1955-56). Commander of the Armoured Corps (1956). Divisional commander in the Sinai War (1956) and OC Southern Command (1957-58). CGS of the IDF (1958-60). Founded and headed the Ports Authority (1961-70). Soldiers' Ombudsman (from 1972).
